Competition Report by the players for Bonneygrove
Having won the local area tournament back in October, Bonneygrove Primary school represented our district in the ESFA County cup finals on Saturday 26th November. Bonneygrove started the morning with a hard fought 0-0 draw against Monksmead. Little did we know that this was a precious result as we would later meet them again in the final!
Our second game was against Whitehill and after the boys settled into their rhythm they got the ball down and started play the football we were used to seeing. It was not long before we got in front and the game ended 2-0 with goals from Louis Matthews and Dylan Gray.
The third game of our group saw us suffer a surprising defeat to St Marys, despite a number of good chances we struggled to score and St Marys capitalised on this when hitting us on the break. The game ended 3-1.
At this point, in a very tough and tightly contested group it was not clear who would progress. 4 of the 5 teams were still in contention with only 1 game remaining each. It meant we needed to come away from our final game with a win.
Oakmere were our final opposition and Bonneygrove rose to the occasion. After a cagey start the boys grew into the game and soon found themselves in front through a fantastic goal from Dylan Gray. Shortly after Oakmere equalised from a mistake at the back. Bonneygrove continued to dominate the second half and regained the lead when Louis Matthews pounced on a split effort from Elliot Price to tap home. The 2-1 saw us top the group and progress to the semi-finals where we met Greenway middle school (Royston).
Our Semi-Final against Greenway saw the Bonneygrove play some of the best football we have played all year. They moved the ball well and dominated possession creating chance after chance. It wasn’t long before the deadlock was broken when Stefanos Georgiou stroked home to make it 1-0. Bonneygrove continued to dominate and the lead was soon doubled with a goal from Dylan Gray. The game ended 2-0 to Bonneygrove and the final awaited!
The final was a repeat of Bonneygrove’s opening fixture with Monksmead (0-0). In the same way as the first game it was a tightly fought contest. Bonneygrove created chances but also were pressed at the back! Both sides continued to create chances but it seemed that the game was again destined to finish goalless and indeed it did! The game went to extra time, Bonneygrove started the brighter of the two teams and with some clever passing and good movement off the ball they created an opening which allowed Stefanos Georgiou to slot home and finally break the deadlock! Bonneygrove concentrated on seeing out the remaining minutes and the game ended 1-0.
All of the boys played fantastically well and were a credit to Bonneygrove Primary school. The stand out performance of the day came from Dylan Gray and he was named player of the tournament.
Coach & Deputy Head teacher Simon England: “I am extremely proud of our boys and the attitude they have shown during this tournament, we are really excited at the prospect of representing Hertfordshire in the regional finals which will take place in Greenwich in March.”
